On Thursday, November 9th and Friday, November 10th, the members of COED gathered at the Teaching Commons at York University Toronto for our annual fall meeting and Curriculum Working Group meeting. We had a cold, but fabulously sunny day to share ideas and (re)connect with each other.
Thanks to the thoughtful organization and facilitation provided by Paola Borin from Ryerson University and Sally Heath from Wilfrid Laurier University, on Thursday, 17 members of the Curriculum Working Group spent the day together discussing matters ranging from the state of implementation of outcomes-based curriculum, visualizing curriculum mapping and techniques for facilitating curriculum improvements through program cyclical review as well as other continuous improvement efforts underway at our institutions. We shared resources and methods that we have found to be valuable and we heard updates from the two projects that got underway last year during the Curriculum Working Group meeting. The projects gained new members this year, and the members had an opportunity to connect in-person to plan their progress over the next year. The community will soon have an opportunity to contribute and see how these projects will bring benefits to all who work to support good curriculum design, development, review and renewal processes.
On Friday, 40 colleagues from our colleges and universities gathered to reflect on the activities of the council over the past year, hear updates from the Educational Developers’ Caucus and the Council of Ontario Universities, as well as participate in provocative and cathartic conversations using an approach called Open Space Technologies, about various topics and concerns that we as Educational Developers are facing. The topics discussed include Diversifying ED, Equality, Diversity & inclusion in ED, Identity of an Educational Developer, Involving Students as Partners, Critical Educational Development, Evidence and Impact of Educational Development, and Work-Life Balance.

The Annual Fall Meeting also marks the transition in the Executive roles of the Council of Ontario Educational Developers. Mary Wilson and Natasha Patrito Hannon ended their brilliant three-year term on the Executive having made numerous contributions to our group and demonstrating tremendous leadership. Beata Pawlowska assumes the role of past-Chair for the coming year and Natasha May and Mandy Frake-Mistak as our incoming Chairs. We are also happy to announce the results of the recent executive election, with Sally Heath being elected to the role of chair, elect. Please do send her your congratulations if you were unable to attend this year’s annual fall meeting.
